That National Baseball Hall of Fame has announced that former Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox has been elected by the Veterans Committee on his first ballot and will be officially inducted next July in Cooperstown.
Cox guided the Braves to a World Championship in 1995, highlighting a record string of 14 consecutive division titles. During 25 seasons with the Braves, Cox was a three-time manager of the year and ranks fourth on the all-time wins list for managers with 2,504 wins.
In addition to his successful managerial record, Cox also holds one of baseball's most ominous records. Although not known for his fiery temper, Cox was always willing to protect his players, often resulting in his ejection. He was tossed from 161 games during his career, surpassing John McGraw's previous record of 131.
Cox, 72, will be joined by fellow first-timers Tony La Russa and Joe Torre, all receiving unanimous votes for election. They are the first legends to be voted in in what promises to be a class for the ages.
Former Braves greats Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine appear to be headed for Cooperstown, along with Cox, on their first-ballot attempt. Other players looking to gain entrance in their first year of eligibility include Frank Thomas, Mike Mussina, and Jeff Kent. Results of the writer's ballot will be announced January 8.
The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place in Cooperstown, N.Y. on July 28, 2014.
