The 38-year-old DeRosa was drafted by the Braves in the 7th round of the 1996 amateur draft. He debuted on September 2, 1998 and played in Atlanta through the 2004 season.
While not an All-Star caliber player, DeRosa accepted his role as utility man and played 90 or more career games at six different positions. His most productive season came in 2008 with the Chicago Cubs where he batted .285 with 30 doubles, 21 homers, and 87 RBI. He finished his career with exactly 100 home runs.
Recently, DeRosa's primary role may have been that of a mentor to the younger players on the team, most notably Blue Jays teammate Brett Lawrie. DeRosa's clubhouse presence and his strong reputation for leadership preceded him in Toronto.
DeRosa is an Ivy Leaguer, having graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was also the starting quarterback for the school's football team.
Within 24 hours of his retirement announcement, DeRosa accepted a position as a studio analyst with the MLB Network, becoming the 19th former Major Leaguer to join the network's staff. DeRosa does have limited experience in the television booth at the MLB Network where he served as a guest analyst during the 2011 and 2013 postseasons.
