Resigning Paul Maholm an Intriguing Proposition for Atlanta Braves

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Paul Maholm became a free agent at the end of the 2013 season and the Braves should make an effort to resign the reliable veteran for 2014.

Paul Maholm

Maholm made his Major League debut in August of 2005 and has averaged 181 innings pitched over the past eight seasons. Although his 2013 campaign was shortened due to injury, Maholm still managed to pitch 153 innings over 26 starts.

Maholm's stats during 2013 were not stellar. He owned a record of 10-11 with a 4.41 ERA while striking out 105.

The crafty left-hander made $6.5 million in 2013 and is reportedly seeking a two year deal in the $14 million range. A deal averaging $7 million or less per season would exclude Maholm from the top 50 starting pitcher salaries, a relative bargain for a proven starter who turned 31-years old during the season.

Maholm, along with Braves second baseman Dan Uggla, was left off the National League Division Series roster this past postseason, a move speculated to be due to Maholm's regular season injury.

The Braves have offered fellow veteran Tim Hudson a one-year deal, but Hudson may leave if tempted by a multi-year deal from another team. Several teams such as the Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals have expressed interest in Hudson.

With the return of Hudson in jeopardy and three members of their starting rotation 25-years old or younger, the Braves may want to seriously consider bringing back Maholm, an innings eater and seasoned veteran, to bolster next year's young squad.

Absolutely NO! Maholm was the 7th best pitcher the Braves had last year. Not nearly worth 7mil a year. Negative.
