The St. Louis Cardinals were the ones to stink up Fenway Park with three errors in game one, but the Boston Red Sox made their own costly errors in game two of the World Series to even the series 1-1.
Up 2-1 after David Ortiz hit a go-ahead homer in the sixth inning, the Cards rallied to put two on with one out against John Lackey, leading to Craig Breslow's entrance. Pete Kozma and John Jay pulled a double steal, which led to the bases being loaded after Daniel Descalso walked.
Matt Carpenter put together one of the most interesting sacrifice flies you'll ever see on a soft flyball to left. Jonny Gomes' throw to Jarrod Saltalamachia was just off target, and Salty was charged with a fielding error for allowing Jay to move to third. Breslow attempted to throw out Jay at third, but his throw sailed into the stands to score a run and move Descalso to third. Carlos Beltran drove in an insurance run one batter later to give the Cards their final 4-2 lead.
Granted, only one of St. Louis' runs were unearned, but taking one game in Boston gives the Cards a distinct advantage going back to their hometown. They can manage to win two out of three games there and return to Boston needing only one win to clinch a title.
And that's how big of a deal defense is in baseball in general, but more so the playoffs. Both teams will have to clean up their act in the field if they expect to bring home a championship this year.
