Brandon Beachy underwent surgery on his right pitching elbow for the second time in just over a year. However, the most recent surgery was a minor procedure to remove some anomalies causing discomfort in his pitching elbow.
After returning to the Atlanta Braves' lineup, Beachy was only good for 5 starts before he experienced significant drops in velocity and control of his pitches caused by major discomforts felt in his pitching elbow.
After undergoing multiple MRI's and X-Rays, a CT Scan finally showed the issues – which included calcified tissue, a small piece of unattached bone, as well as another bone spur. Beachy was relieved when scans showed there were no problems with his surgically repaired UCL ligament.
Beachy is expected to be back to normal after 4-6 weeks of rest, and will report for spring training in 2014 fully healthy and ready to contribute. While Beachy had some rocky moments in his 5 starts in 2013, Brian McCann said he felt Beachy's change-up was the best it had ever been.
Should Beachy return to form, he could serve as an anchor for an already strong Atlanta Braves rotation going into 2014.
