The Atlanta Braves have Andrelton Simmons to thank in large part for securing a win over the Chicago Cubs on the same day they clinched the National League East title with the Washington Nationals' loss. Simmons clobbered two homers and made a spectacular bare hand play on a Starlin Castro grounder, as seen in the video below.
Simmons lined a solo shot into the left field basket off Edwin Jackson in the fourth inning and a two-run homer off Brooks Raley in the eighth for his second career two-home run game.
The 17 homers Simmons has hit this season ties Jeff Blauser's 17 in 1997 for the second most by a Braves shortstop, short of only Denis Menke's 20 for the 1964 Milwaukee Braves.
The Braves have a one-game lead on the St. Louis Cardinals for the best record in the National League.
