San Diego Padres starter Burch Smith struck out ten in seven innings and Chase Headley homered for the third straight game to lead the Padres past the Atlanta Braves 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Turner Field in Atlanta.
Smith (1-1, 6.57) held the Braves scoreless through seven innings of play. Braves starter Julio Teheran (12-8, 3.14) was not sharp, giving up four earned runs on seven hits through 6 2/3 innings pitched.
Headley continued to bully the Braves with two more hits, including his home run, and leadoff man Will Venable added three hits, including a double, for the Padres.
The Braves offense was non-existent, collecting four hits, which included a single by Teheran. Freddie Freeman provided the Braves only extra-base hit with a double in the ninth.
The Braves magic number remains at 4 with the loss.
Following the game, the Braves will head to Washington for Monday night's 7:05 PM game against the Nationals. Atlanta will send Mike Minor (13-7, 3.15) to the mound to face Nationals starter Dan Haren (9-13, 5.02). The Nationals are currently ten games behind the Braves in the National League East.
