Good news abounds with Jason Heyward. The Atlanta Braves outfielder had his braces and rubber bands removed from his mouth today, and he is expected to take batting practice with the team on Friday, Kevin McAlpin reports.

Heyward has been out since New York Mets pitcher Jon Niese broke his jaw Aug. 21 with an errant fastball. He had surgery soon after to insert two plates to cover the fractures.

Instructional League games begin next Monday, which will allow Heyward to get some at-bats before rejoining Atlanta for the last week or so of the season.

Heyward hit .345 with five homers and 15 RBIs in the 23 games he played since being moved to leadoff.
