Jason Heyward had a good outcome to his meeting with doctors Friday; a follow up appointment Monday will help clarify how soon he can rejoin the Atlanta Braves, and that could be as soon as next week, braves.com reports.
Heyward has been out since Aug. 21 since having his jaw broken by New York Mets pitcher Jon Niese. He had surgery to insert two metal plates in his face, but he has been hitting off a tee and throwing the last week or so.
"I don't have any expectations," Fredi Gonzalez said. "The report was he looked good. There is a chance he'll rejoin us on Monday or Tuesday in Miami. I don't know how much hitting we want him to do [without supervision]. Off the tee is fine, maybe some cardio, but I really don't know."
Atlanta hasn't currently set a timetable for Heyward's return to the lineup, but Gonzalez also said he'll need some kind of game action, and the Instructional League doesn't start until Sept. 16., and games don't start until a week after that.
