After assuming the closer role for the Atlanta Braves in 2011, following the retirement of Billy Wagner, Craig Kimbrel's performance has been dominant. On Wednesday, he was awarded the Delivery Man of the Month for August by Major League Baseball. It was the third time Kimbrel has won the award.
Kimbrel led the majors with twelve saves and also recorded a win during the month of August. He becomes the fifth relief pitcher to win the award on three separate occasions. Only Trevor Hoffman, Joe Nathan, J.J. Putz, and Rafael Soriano have achieved the feat.
The numbers Kimbrel produced in August are staggering. He allowed eight hits in sixteen innings of work, striking out nineteen and only walking two. Opponents batted a paltry .138 against Kimbrel and his earned run average dropped to 0.95.
The 25-year-old right hander leads all of MLB with 44 saves and has posted 40 saves or more each year for the past three years. His season ERA of 0.94 and opponents batting average of .159 are both tops for all closers with 18 or more saves.
