In order to get Evan Gattis some at-bats, the Atlanta Braves have optioned El Oso Blanco to Triple-A Gwinnett.

The slumping rookie catcher was hitless in his last 17 at-bats and has hit just .188 with three homers and 15 RBIs in 36 games since June 1.

“We forget that he’s a rookie,” Fredi Gonzalez said on ajc.com. “The way he started, rookies don’t start that way. Usually they start struggling and then they kind of catch up for a little bit, maybe get sent down for a week or a month or so and come back up and do well. But he started like ‘man, oh man,’ he couldn’t do anything wrong. And sometimes you forget because he’s a little bit older than most rookies that he’s a rookie and he’s going to go through some of these things.”

The Braves announced the move after El Oso Blanco Night at Turner Field, during which Gattis didn't start but was issued an intentional walk in a pinch-hit appearance.

Gattis will still be eligible for the playoffs, and Atlanta will bring him back when the minor league season is over.

The Braves have yet to announce a corresponding move.
