St. Louis Cardinals starter Shelby Miller turned in another strong pitching performance, only allowing one run, courtesy of a Freddie Freeman homer, as St. Louis defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-2 Saturday night at Busch Stadium.
Miller (12-8, 2.90) pitched seven innings and Carlos Beltran added three hits and two runs batted in for the Cardinals, who improved to 76-53 on the season. The Cardinals also recorded multi-hit games from Matt Carpenter and Shane Robinson to turn away Atlanta.
The Braves bats continued to be quiet, as Freeman homered and pinch hitter Gerald Laird doubled to drive in Atlanta's only runs. They have mustered only five runs through the first three games of the series against the Cardinals.
Atlanta starter Julio Teheran (10-7, 3.08) received the loss for the Braves. Teheran allowed four earned runs, including two in the Cardinals four-run seventh inning.
With the loss, Atlanta's lead in the National League East falls to 12 games. The second place Washington Nationals defeated the Kansas City Royals 7-2 earlier in the night.
St. Louis can move into a tie for first place in the National League Central with a Pittsburgh Pirates loss later tonight. The Pirates are playing a late game in San Francisco.
The final game of Atlanta's four-game series against the Cardinals is scheduled for tomorrow at 2:15 PM. The Braves will send left-hander Mike Minor (12-5, 3.06) to the mound against the Cardinals Lance Lynn (13-7, 3.97).
Following tomorrow afternoon's finale, the Braves will get a much needed day off on Monday before traveling to Atlanta for a three game series with the Cleveland Indians.
