The Atlanta Braves placed starting pitcher Brandon Beachy on the 15-day disabled list on Friday due to tightness in his pitching elbow. Beachy underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2012 and returned to the rotation in late July 2013 following a lengthy rehabilitation.
Outfielder Todd Cunningham was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday to replace Beachy on the roster. Beachy will have his arm examined on Monday by Dr. James Andrews, who performed his surgery last year.
The Braves acquired veteran right-hander Freddy Garcia today from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for cash. He will be assigned to Gwinnett for the moment but should soon return to the majors for Atlanta.
Garcia's presence will have a positive effect on Atlanta's young pitching staff. The Braves have five solid starters on the pitching staff, not including Beachy. Paul Maholm, Alex Wood, Mike Minor, Julio Teheran, and Kris Medlen are all on the Braves' active roster.
Assuming Beachy returns for the postseason, the Braves will have seven starters and an effective bullpen for manager Fredi Gonzalez, who also hopes to have offensive stars Jason Heyward and Dan Uggla back in the lineup.
