The good news is that Jason Heyward didn't have to have his fractured jaw wired shut, instead getting metal plates on the right side of his face and on his chin, Dave O'Brien tweets. He may be able to return to the Atlanta Braves as soon as late September.

Dr. Glen Maron performed the procedure in Atlanta, and manager Fredi Gonzalez was encouraged by what he heard.

He sounds good on the text [messages]," Gonzalez said on braves.com. "He says he wants to see us when we get back home. He wants to be with the club."

Heyward was hit in the face by a Jon Niese fastball in the Braves' win over the New York Mets on Thursday. He will play in instructional league games in September to rehab, because the minor league seasons will be finished by then.
