The pitch hit Heyward squarely in the right side of his jaw, just below the ear. He was able to walk off, but appeared to be understandably disoriented by the 94 mph fastball from left-hander Jon Niese.
Heyward has seen the Mets in-stadium doctor, and is currently waiting in the Braves' training room, awaiting transport to a local Manhattan hospital. Heyward refused a stretcher, and left the stadium walking with an ice pack on his jaw.
Bearing in mind, Citi Field has in-house x-ray capabilities, as Tim Hudson did not require a trip to the hospital when his ankle was injured by Eric Young Jr, it makes Heyward's trip to an outside hospital that much more disconcerting for Braves fans.
