Major League veteran Michael Young has cleared waivers and appears to be on his way out of Philadelphia. That is, if he agrees to waive his no trade clause. The Atlanta Braves are a perfect place for Young to bring his talents.
With Dan Uggla recently being place on the 15-day disabled list to undergo laser eye surgery, the Braves are in need of another infielder in their lineup. Uggla should return in time for September, but the Braves need the insurance and experience of Young to help get them to the playoffs.
Young is the type of player who would fit in nicely with the Braves culture. He is dependable, hard working, and does not create trouble.
In fact, he has agreed to move to positions on two separate occasions while a member of the Texas Rangers a few years ago. Originally a shortstop, Young agreed to move to third to accommodate rookie Elvis Andrus, and then from third to first to make room for free agent Adrian Beltre.
Young also knows what it means to win and is willing to do what is necessary to help his team achieve success. He has played in two World Series so he would add to the Braves postseason experience.
While Uggla's power numbers are superior to Young's, his batting average and on base percentage are not. At .273, Young is batting nearly 100 points better than Uggla, and boasts a better OBP as well.
Young's defense is on par with that of Uggla and would not present a liability to the Braves. Young has played 446 games at second base over his career and boasts a .986 fielding percentage.
A final bonus for Young is his ability to play multiple positions. He has significant experience at every infield position.
The Phillies are not interested in re-signing Young at the end of the season and even if Young leaves the Braves following the postseason, he is worth the rental.
The Braves seem poised to be a force coming into October and could benefit from a seasoned pro like Young. Even if that means giving up prospects. This could be their year and they need to do whatever it takes to try and bring another championship to the city of Atlanta.
