Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Paul Maholm threw a 79-pitch simulated game at Turner Field on Monday and hopes to continue his recovery later in the week.

The left-handed Maholm felt no discomfort during the simulation, in which he was up and down six times. He looks to begin a rehab assignment by this weekend and could re-join the Braves' staff as early as next week.

Maholm went on the disabled list in late July with a bruised left wrist.

His return could mean a six-man rotation or it could give other Braves starters some much needed rest. However, manager Fredi Gonzalez is not willing to rush the decision, as he described to Mark Bowman of

"We could give somebody a rest and plug Pauly in there and do that if we have to," Gonzalez said. "You could go six-man [rotation]; I haven't looked at the schedule. Do you want to do that and disrupt that? I don't know, we'll see. But if everything goes well, you're still talking nine days from now — five and then another four after [the rehab start]. You're talking eight or nine days before you make that decision."

Atlanta will be expanding its active roster on September 1  from 25 to 40, which will give the Braves even more opportunities to rest its pitching staff going into the playoffs.

Maholm has posted a 9-9 record on the season with a 4.41 ERA and has been a member of the Braves' starting rotation since being acquired, along with outfielder Reed Johnson, from the Pittsburgh Pirates at last year’s trade deadline.
