Atlanta Braves starter Mike Minor tossed 7 innings and Freddie Freeman added a three-run home run as the Braves beat the Miami Marlins 9 to 4 to take the best-of-three game series at Turner Field in Atlanta. The Braves increased their record to 72-46 on the season.
The Marlins took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning. Former Braves farmhand Ed Lucas doubled and scored on Jake Marisnick’s single to left field. Koyie Hill followed with a single and Marisnick and Hill scored on Marlin’s starter Henderson Alvarez’s triple. The Marlins added another run in the sixth when Giancarlo Stanton scored on a Lucas sacrifice fly.
The Braves scored a single run in the second and three runs in the fifth to keep pace with the Marlins, but blew the game open in the seventh inning against the hapless Miami bullpen. Atlanta used doubles by Gattis and Chris Johnson and a sacrifice fly by B.J. Upton to take an 8-4 lead. The Braves added another run in the eighth.
Jason Heyward continued his good work in the leadoff spot, adding four more hits and scoring twice. Gattis contributed three hits, including a pair of doubles, and Freeman had three RBIs in the Braves victory.
Anthony Varvaro pitched a perfect ninth for the first-place Braves, whose victory pushes their lead over the Washington Nationals to 15 games. The Nationals take on the Philadelphia Phillies tonight at 5:05 PM at Nationals park.
The Braves welcome the Phillies to Turner Field for a three game series beginning tomorrow night. Atlanta will send Julio Teheran (9-5, 2.96) to the mound to face Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels (4-13, 3.81.) Game time is 7:10 PM.
