McCann's knee actually started bothering him before Friday's game, when he went 2-for-4 with a homer, but he notified Fredi Gonzalez after the game. That led to him sitting Saturday.
“I tried to play through it last year and it kept getting worse and worse and worse,” McCann said on ajc.com. “I just want to make sure that I don’t push it when I don’t need to.”
McCann even blamed it partially on the hard ground at Nationals Park, which he said was so tough he could barely dig in his spikes.
Playing catcher also hurt McCann's ability to play, as his knees were only sore while squatting. He was able to pinch-hit Sunday if the need arose, particularly with Gerald Laird being activated from the disabled list.
