Atlanta Braves Likely to Make Waiver Trade in August

The Atlanta Braves met their biggest need by acquiring Scott Downs from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim before the non-waiver trade deadline. But they still have some needs that will have to be met during August, which will have to be met with a waiver trade.

Atlanta will likely pursue a utility infield, preferably one who can left-handed to replace Ramiro Pena, who is out for the season with a shoulder injury. There are also rumblings that Frank Wren could trade for a starting pitcher, depending how well the rotation, especially Brandon Beachy, performs in the coming weeks.

Wren also cites high asking prices for a reason no deal was made at the deadline.

“The asking prices were very high,” Wren said on ajc.com. “In most cases, you see that every year early in the process, but we didn’t see the prices really go down. We were looking for blue-light specials in the last hour and it didn’t happen.”

The Braves still also have B.J. Upton, Reed Johnson and Jordan Schafer out with injuries, which is clouding the overall picture.

Upton started a rehab assignment Wednesday, and Schafer will likely start his own rehab assignment over the weekend. Johnson is a little different of a story in that the Braves haven't set any timetable for his return from Achilles tendinitis.

Still, Wren is being patient.

“As we get a little closer to the waiver deadline and the postseason deadline we’ll have a better sense of our club,” Wren said. “It’s important to know what we have and what we need, and we’re not quite there yet.”

And it's not like the Braves are in desperate need of anything. Their six-game winning streak has put them up 11 games in the National League East.
