B.J. Upton and Justin Upton have essentially been empty spots in the Atlanta Braves lineup most of the season. They very well may have changed that on Tuesday as they both produced in big ways in a 6-4 win over the Miami Marlins at Marlins Park.
Justin produced two doubles and his first homer since June 12, while B.J. only had two singles but hit every ball hard and drove in the Braves' first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. B.J. also scored the go-ahead run after singling in the sixth.
"I'm starting to feel better at the plate, actually a lot better," B.J. said on braves.com. "I'm hitting the ball a lot better. Hopefully I can take this right to the break and have something to build on."
Meanwhile, Julio Teheran gave the Braves the start they needed after going 14 innings on Monday. The rookie righty threw 7 1/3 innings, giving up just one earned run (four total).
Teheran started out a little rough by needing 51 pitches to get through the third inning, albeit with shoddy defense behind him. He got efficient after that and just needed 44 pitches the rest of the way.
The bulk of the Marlins' offensive production came with two outs in the second inning, when Justin Upton took a bad route to a Logan Morrison flyball, allowing it to drop for a one-out single. Chris Johnson then made an error on Marcell Ozuna's grounder, which would have been an easy double play. Rob Brantly then blasted a three-run homer off the foul pole to put the Fish up 3-1.
Justin would atone for his mistakes with an RBI-double in the third inning that scored Jason Heyward from first and a double in the fifth, setting him up to score on a single by Brian McCann to tie the game.
Upton's seventh-inning homer was by far his most impressive hit of the game. The solo shot off Ryan Webb was a towering homer that would have hit the sculpture beyond the left-center field wall had it been moved over about 10 feet.
The Braves go for the sweep Wednesday before heading home for a four-game set with the Cincinnati Reds.
