Atlanta Braves outfield Jason Heyward had an emergency appendectomy late Monday night. He will likely be placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Braves.com reports that Heyward experienced discomfort in his abdomen for the entirety of the weekend series with the Pittsburgh Pirates. When he still had pain Monday morning, he visited team doctor Joe Chandler, who ordered him to a Denver hospital for the successful laparoscopic.

The Braves are expected to place Heyward on the DL on Tuesday, making room for either Jose Constanza or Tyler Pastornicky to be called up from Triple-A Gwinnett. Appendectomies typically take two to three weeks to recover from, but ajc.com reports that Matt Holliday and Adam Dunn returned in about a week when they both had the procedure in 2011.

The surgery could enable Heyward to clear his mind from his league-worst .121 batting average he's accumulated so far this season.
