Atlanta Braves reliever Luis Avilan threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday afternoon at PNC Park, braves.com reports. Though the lefty was encouraged with his progress, the team is still on the fence with whether he will need time on the disabled list.
"[The bullpen session] was just okay, nothing that you're going to say, 'Yeah, we feel good about running him out there,'" Fredi Gonzalez said. "But it's only been two days since he came out with us thinking he pulled the hamstring off the bone. There is some progress there. So maybe we can wait a few more days until we actually need something."
Avilan fell while delivering a pitch during Tuesday's game and had to be carted off the field with a strained hamstring and cramp. It looks like he won't be ready until at least Sunday's series finale with the Pittsburgh Pirates. If he does need DL time, he can be placed on it retroactive to Tuesday.
Cristhian Martinez is eligible to come off the disabled list on Monday, so that would allow the Braves to essentially swap the relievers.Tags: Atlanta, Atlanta Braves, Luis Avilan, MLB
