The Atlanta Braves held shortstop Andrelton Simmons out of Saturday night's game with the Chicago Cubs after he informed the team's medical staff that his left thumb was sore, braves.com reports.

Simmons injured the thumb on a poorly executed headfirst slide where his fingers were completely extended, forcing him to jam his thumb into the bag. He was scratched from the lineup Saturday afternoon, and Fredi Gonzalez says he'll likely sit until Monday.

"I feel good enough to go out there," Simmons said. "If it was up to me, I'd put myself in the lineup. They're trying to make the best decision for the team and [for me]. I understand. I didn't expect to be taken out [of the lineup]. Otherwise, I wouldn't have said anything."

While Simmons is out of the lineup, Ramiro Pena will play shortstop and B.J. Upton will lead off.

Simmons missed two months last season when he broke his right pinky on a headfirst slide.
