With Sunday being Opening Day, the Atlanta Braves have officially placed Jonny Venters on the 15-day disabled list with his sprained left elbow and purchased the contract of Evan Gattis, the Washington Post reports.
Venters will have his elbow examined by Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday, which never bodes well for pitchers. Venters already had Tommy John surgery performed by Andrews in 2005.
After putting up a 4.45 ERA before the All-Star break, Venters went on the DL with an elbow impingement. The rest rejuventated Venters' season as he put up a 1.71 ERA over his final 26 appearances.
The timing of Venters going on the DL also allows Anthony Varvaro and Cristhian Martinez to remain on the 25-man roster. They are both out of minor league options.
The move also made room for Evan Gattis on the big league roster, who will backup Gerald Laird at catcher until Brian McCann returns in late April.Tags: Atlanta, Atlanta Braves, Evan Gattis, Jonny Venters, MLB
