The fact that Chipper Jones is not at Spring Training with the Atlanta Braves yet shouldn't be surprising with the fact that he's finally retired, but had been expected to come and throw around a few pointers, only to not show up the first day of camp, braves.com reports.
Alas, it was not the case. Rumors swirled that he was in Nashville or hunting, but no one could confirm anything, though even the guys who didn't know of Chipper's intended attendance were disappointed he wasn't there.
"You kind of expected him to come around the corner," Chris Johnson said. "I wanted to turn around and ask [Chipper] some questions. I like to pick his brain… I didn't even know he was supposed to be here, and I missed him anyway."
Freddie Freeman, who lives less than a mile away from Chipper, knew Jones wouldn't attend on Friday but still says there's a noticeable difference without no. 10.
"Even though I didn't expect him to be here, it was different without him," Freeman said. "And it can't be the same here without him."
Word is that Jones will attend on Saturday and dress in the coaches' locker room. Fredi Gonzalez thinks the reasoning is so he wouldn't detract attention from the Braves' new arrivals.
"I'll bet he didn't want to be here the first day and take some of the attention away from the Uptons and the other guys," Gonzalez said. "I don't know that, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's why he isn't here today. But he'll be here tomorrow probably."
Gonzalez said that Jones will get the last locker available in the coaches' locker room, "because he's late."
