Chipper Jones to Spend Time at Atlanta Braves Spring Training

Former Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones will be at Spring Training this season after all, as a guest, Mark Bowman reports.

The Braves officially report to camp in Kissimmee, Fla., on Feb. 14, and Chipper, by team request, will spend five days at Spring Training starting Feb. 15. Instead of preparing for the 2013 season, however, Jones will instead catch up with his old teammates, possibly roam and throw out some pointers and play golf.

Jones and his 40-year-old knees are comforted by the fact that he hasn't had to go through the rigors of just getting in shape for the season again.

"Quite frankly, I have not had the itch whatsoever," Jones said. "I actually think it's been nice to go through an offseason without having to schedule an hour-and-a-half workout into each and every day to get ready for Spring Training. That lets me know I made the right decision. I don't have the urge to work at the game the way I used to."

Regardless of what he's doing in Florida, Jones wants to make sure he's not detracting from what the team needs to be doing.

"I don't want to take anything away from the guys on the team," Jones said. "I don't want to be a distraction. To be honest, I don't want to deal with it. We've got to let those guys get their work in. I just don't feel that it is right for me to be down there right now."
