It took 11 months after shoulder surgery, but Moylan finally worked his way back through four levels and 21 games of minor league ball. He struck out 21 in batters in 22 2/3 innings, but he said he wasn't expecting to be called up when the rosters expanded today.
"I was almost in tears to be honest," Moylan said of receiving the call Wednesday. "I wasn't expecting it. I wasn't sitting there hoping I was going to be called up in September. I thought my season was over. I was going to go to Norfolk, pitch in a couple more games and go home."
Moylan, who signed a minor league contract after his surgery last October, didn't expect as recently as last week to be called up. Instead, he faced three Philadelphia Phillies hitters Friday afternoon at Turner FIeld and induced three groundouts.
"It certainly hasn't been smooth sailing," Moylan said. "It wasn't like I got straight into games and got guys out like I used to. It's been a whole new learning process for me."
The 33-year-old Australian native has spent all seven of his Major League seasons with the Braves.
