In a pair of moves Monday, the Atlanta Braves re-called outfielder Jose Constanza and optioned reliever Anthony Varvaro to Triple-A Gwinnett, Dave O'Brien reports.

With a healthy Jonny Venters back in the bullpen and Matt Diaz on the DL with a potentially season-ending injury, the Braves opted for more depth on the bench after a strong comeback outing by Venters.

Constanza has been red hot recently and had a 22-game hit streak snapped last week. He has hit .324 with a .386 on-base percentage and 11 stolen bases in 71 games at Gwinnett. This will be his second stint with Atlanta this year.

“He was swinging it pretty good down there,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “He gives us a chance to defend, if we want to, late in the game. Say you don’t want to run [Eric] Hinske out there [in the outfield]. He can pinch-run off the bench.”

In 12 appearances this season, Varvaro had compiled a 5.40 ERA in 16 2/3 innings.
