In need of a bullpen arm for Saturday's doubleheader with the Washington Nationals, the Atlanta Braves have activated Jonny Venters from the disabled list early. His roster spot was made available by the Braves also placing Matt Diaz on the DL with an open would to his right hand containing foreign bodies.
The move will prevent Venters from making his scheduled second rehab appearance, but Craig Kimbrel and Eric O'Flaherty are only available in emergency situations because they have thrown in three consecutive games. Venters had been on the DL since July 5 with a left elbow impingement.
Diaz, meanwhile, has been dealing with an open wound to his right hand, which was shown via an MRI to have two foreign bodies. In the hopes of avoiding season-ending surgery, he is on antibiotics.
"It's been bothering me for a while and I've tried to play through it," Diaz told mlb.com. "But I've not been effective doing it."
Diaz was unable to hold a bat on Friday and informed Fredi Gonzalez that his hand was not getting better.Tags: Atlanta, Atlanta Braves, Jonny Venters, Matt Diaz, MLB
