With the Atlanta Braves riding high after their big win over the New York Yankees, manager Fredi Gonzalez had to bring down everyone's spirits with the announcement everyone expected and no one wanted to hear. Brandon Beachy will undergo Tommy John surgery on Thursday.
Dr. James Andrews confirmed what team doctors had already diagnosed as a torn ulnar collateral ligament in Beachy's throwing arm. Tommy John surgery usually requires 12-14 months of rehab.
Beachy came out of his start June 16 against the Baltimore Orioles when he walked Chris Davis after retiring the first 11 batters he faced. His fastball velocity suddenly dipped from 93 to 86 miles per hour.
The 25-year-old righty is currently leading the big leagues with a 2.00 ERA and a 5-5 record.
The Braves will call up Jair Jurrjens from Triple-A to start Friday at Boston.Tags: Atlanta, Atlanta Braves, Brandon Beachy, MLB
