It didn't take a blown out knee like Mariano Rivera's, but Fredi Gonzalez has instituted a ban on Atlanta Braves players throwing a Frisbee before batting practice.
While he is not banning pitchers from shagging fly balls, which is what Rivera was doing when he tore his ACL, Gonzalez sees a greater risk of injury with players throwing a Frisbee. Some afternoons have even seen more than 10 players partaking.
"If you watch our BP, watch [Craig] Kimbrel and [Jonny] Venters shag," Gonzalez said. "That's how they get their running in. But that Frisbee, that's out of the question. I solved that a couple days ago. It's not because it's bad. But if something happens, I don't want to answer the questions."
Pitchers, including Braves legends John Smoltz and Greg Maddux, have a long tradition of using batting practice fielding for conditiong, but Gonzalez would later state that he had no desire to answer Frank Wren as to why a stud reliever like Jonny Venters had pulled something.
