Brian McCann had to leave in the fifth inning of the Atlanta Braves' win over the Pittsburgh Pirates Friday with a strained intercostal muscle. He is currently day-to-day.
McCann missed most of last August with a strained left oblique and suffered through September because he came back too quickly. This injury, however, is on the opposite side and higher up in the ribcage.
Describing leaving the game as precautionary, McCann is trying to ensure that he truly is day-to-day.
"I want to be smart about things and make sure it is a day or two or three instead of a DL stint," McCann said.
McCann was injured when he blocked a ball in the dirt and threw to second base in the fifth inning while trying to prevent a wild pitch. He exited the game after grounding out in the bottom of the inning.
"We'll know more tomorrow," Fredi Gonzalez said. "It's up high between the ribs. We're not really overly concerned. If it is with the oblique, it is a different story."
