The Atlanta Braves have called up Cory Gearrin from Triple-A Gwinnett to take the spot vacated when they optioned Jair Jurrjens to the minors.

Gearrin nearly made the team out of Spring Training until he struggled in two consecutive appearances toward the end. The Braves faced with the choice of Gearrin and Yohan Flande (who is not on the 40-man roster), opted instead to sign Chad Durbin for the Opening Day roster.

In 12 1/3 scoreless innings with Gwinnett, Gearrin has racked up 15 strikeouts and a miniscule .973 WHIP.

Gearrin posted a 7.85 ERA in 18 appearances with Atlanta in 2011, but that was mostly inflated by two atrocious outings in July. He particularly struggled against lefties, who hit .393 against him last year. To combat that, Roger McDowell says he has been working more on his changeup.
