Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez told mlb.com yesterday that Jose Constanza will contend for the final bench spot in Spring Training.
Constanza's speed would give the Braves a legitimate backup to Michael Bourn in center field.
"He did enough last year that he deserves to get not [just] a look, but an opportunity,” Gonzalez said.
Constanza hit .303 and stole seven bases in 42 games last season. He made his mark in August when he effectively replaced the struggling Jason Heyward and hit .342 for the month. He struggled down the stretch with September batting average of .174.
