The Atlanta Braves have placed Chipper Jones on the 15-day disabled list with a torn right meniscus. The move may result in the Braves veteran to undergo arthroscopic surgery.
Jones said after Friday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies that he was considering skipping the All-Star Game in order to allow his knee some recovery time. By going on the DL now, Jones can use four days of the minimum 15 from the All-Star break.
Jones received a cortisone injection after Sunday's game, rested Monday, and played in the Braves' next four games, but he says the pain has not gotten any better. He first learned of the tear on May 15.
Atlanta has recalled Brandon Hicks from Triple-A Gwinnett to replace Jones on the roster. Hicks has batted .267 with 14 homers and a .529 slugging percentage in 187 at-bats with Gwinnett this year. He has hit 1-for-19 in 15 games for Atlanta this year.
